Risk Assessment of Diabetes Mellitus: Finnish Diabetes Association Scale

Sembian Nandagopal

Abstract

Objective: To identify the risk of development diabetes among patients and relatives and find out the association of risk of developing diabetes mellitus (DM) with selected demographic variables. Methods: Non-experimental approach, descriptive design was used to measure the risk of development diabetes with 63 samples. Convenient sampling technique was used and the data were collected by Finnish Diabetes Association (FDA) Scale. Result: 49.2 % of subjects had slightly elevated chance for risk of developing DM followed by 11.1% moderate, 6.3% high and 1.6% very high, respectively. Overall mean for developing DM score among patient and relatives was ± 4.005 with standard error of 0.505 as per FDA scale. Conclusion: The study findings conclude that 60.3% of samples had slight and moderate chance to develop DM. Prevention of DM among young adults at increased risk includes a simple three-step plan for identification of those who may be at higher risk, measurement of risk and the intervention to prevent the development of DM.
