Preetha Thomas

Abstract

A study was undertaken to assess the knowledge regarding care of client with Beating Heart Surgery among Staff Nurses working at selected hospitals, A.P. Objectives: To assess the knowledge regarding care of client with Beating Heart Surgery among Staff Nurses in experimental and control group by pretest. To compare the knowledge before and after structured teaching programme regarding care of clients with beating heart surgery among Staff Nurses in experimental group. To compare the pretest and posttest knowledge of staff nurses in control group. To compare the posttest knowledge of Staff Nurses in experimental and control group. To test the association between posttest knowledge with their selected background variables among Staff Nurses in experimental group. Research hypothesis: H1 – There will be significant difference between pre- and posttest knowledge among experimental group. H2 – There will be significant difference in posttest knowledge on care of client with beating heart surgery between experimental and control group. H3 – There will be significant association between the posttest knowledge of experiemental group with their selected background variables. Method: A quasi experimental study with control group was adopted for the present study. A structured Knowledge questionnaire on ‘care of client with Beating Heart Surgery among staff nurses’ was developed to collect the data. Pilot study was conducted from 22th March to 28th March 2013 to find out the feasibility of the study among staff nurses. The main study was conducted from 27th April to 6th May 2013 at selected hospitals. Sixty staff nurses (Thirty in experimental group, thirty in control group) were selected by using Non- probability convenient sampling technique. Collected data was analyzed and interpreted with help descriptive statistics and inferential analysis. Results: In experimental group the overall knowledge of pretest was 27.97 whereas the overall mean of posttest was 36.90. In control group the overall knowledge of pretest was 26.23 whereas the overall mean of posttest was 28.13. The mean difference between pretest and posttest knowledge in experimental group was 8.933 and the ‘t’ value was 9.364 and it was found to be highly significant at the level of p<0.05, when compared to control group with mean difference between pre- and posttest knowledge of 1.9 and the ‘t’ value of 3.419. The obtained unpaired ‘t’ value for posttest knowledge among experimental and control group was 7.949 with a mean difference of 8.767 and found to be highly significant at level of p<0.05. Significant association was found between posttest knowledge with source of information on care of client with beating heart surgery among staff nurses in experimental group. The obtained chi square was 15.938 and it was significant at p<0.05. Conclusion: The present study was taken up in an effort to assess the knowledge of Staff Nurses regarding care of clients with Beating Heart Surgery through pre- and posttest. Structured teaching programme was conducted on Knowledge of Staff Nurses on care of Clients with Beating Heart Surgery. The staff nurses in experimental group had 27.97 (69.9%) score in pretest and 36.90 (92.3%) in posttest. Whereas in control group staff nurses had 26.23 (65.6%) score in pretest and in posttest 28.13(70.3%). The paired ‘t’ test showed that the mean difference between the pre- and the posttest knowledge score was highly significant.
