Total Parenteral Nutrition

Santosh Kumari

Abstract

TPN means that the infusion is providing complete nutritional requirements via the bloodstream, intravenously. Through TPN administers proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals. It aims to prevent and restore nutritional deficits, allowing bowel rest while supplying adequate caloric intake and essential nutrients, and removing antigenic mucosal stimuli. Total parenteral nutrition can be delivered either centrally, into the superior vena cava, or peripherally, that is into other veins.
