Posttraumatic Stress Experience after Myocardial Infarction among Patient with MI

Abstract


A study was conducted to assess the posttraumatic stress experience after myocardial infarction among patient with MI admitted in tertiary care hospital at Bangalore. Methodology: Nonexperimental descriptive design and survey approach was used. In this study, structured interview questionnaire was adapted to collect the data. The study was carried out in Vivas Cardiac Hospital at Bangalore with 60 myocardial infarction patients were selected using nonprobability purposive sampling technique. Collected data were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: Majority of the patients 31(51.6%) were in the age group of >60 years and 38 (63.3%) were males. Highest number of the patients 57 (95%) were married and joint family. A total of 21 (35%) had two children and 42 (70%) were less than one year of illness, and 53 (88.3%) were admitted to hospital related to myocardial infarction presently. Maximum 33 (55%) of the MI patient had mild level of posttraumatic stress experience, 27 (45%) of the sample were moderate posttraumatic stress experience. There was no statistical significant association found between posttraumatic stress experience and their selected demographic variables of MI patients. Conclusion: The study was concluded that the based on the above findings of the study, myocardial infarction patients were found mild and moderate level of posttraumatic stress experience and they need more information, social support, knowledge of MI, counseling services and awareness of myocardial infarction.
