Abstract

Introduction: Normally, a person is unaware of breathing process, a physiological function that is essential for life itself. However, it is quickly recognised that even a slight disturbance of the respiratory system causes both, psychological and physiological responses. Fear and anxiety are common reactions to difficulty in breathing, and the body attempts to gain control of its breathing. Several automatic, protective physiological responses are also in place to increase air conduction and to protect the airways from inhaling irritants and excess mucus when needed. Artificial airways may be used by clients with significant airways obstruction that cannot be relieved by more conservative means or who require mechanical ventilator support. Endotracheal suctioning (ETS) is mainly performed by nurses to remove secretions and debris from the tracheobronchial tree through mechanical aspiration. Endotracheal tube suctioning remains a routine practice in the intensive care unit with different practices across the ICU. Therefore, it is important that methods of suctioning the endotracheal tube that minimizes complications should be identified and implemented into practice. A study was undertaken “To assess the effectiveness of planned teaching programme on knowledge regarding technique of endotracheal suctioning among staff nurses in selected hospital of Jabalpur city”. Methodology:An evaluative research approach with one group pre-test, post-test design was used for the study. The sample consisted of 60 staff nurses who were working in medical ward, surgical ward and ICU at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College of Jabalpur City, Madhya Pradesh. They were chosen by non-probability purposive sampling technique. Result: The present study moves further to know the statistical significance between pre-test and post-test knowledge score‘t’ test was computed. The post test knowledge score (24.46) of staff nurses were found to be significantly higher than their mean pre-test knowledge score (18.36). This suggested the effectiveness of planned teaching programme in increasing the knowledge of staff nurses regarding technique of endotracheal suctioning. Conclusion: It is statistically proved and concluded that the planned teaching programme on knowledge regarding technique of endotracheal suctioning, is highly effective for improving the knowledge score of staff nurses who are working in medical ward, surgical ward and ICU at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College of Jabalpur City (Madhya Pradesh).
