A Descriptive Study to Assess the Knowledge Regarding Road Safety among Students in a Selected Higher Secondary School of District Tarn- Taran, Punjab

Abstract


The aim of the study is to assess the knowledge of school students regarding road safety. Road safety is the methods and measures for reducing the risk of person using the road network for being killed or seriously injured. Children are nation’s biggest asset. Every year 1, 40,590 people die due to road traffic accidents. Road safety is the necessity of each human being to protect oneself and other’s life because there is day to day increase the number of the traffic and that leads road traffic accidents. The study adopted a descriptive research design to assess the knowledge of students regarding road safety in selected higher secondary school of district Tarn- Taran, Punjab. The sample size was 100 school students. Convenient Sampling technique was used. The tool was two sections, section 1 consists of a self structured demographic questionnaire and section 2 consists of a self structured knowledge questionnaire. Analysis was done using descriptive and inferential statistics. The result indicates that out of 100 samples, the majority 61% had adequate knowledge, 31% had moderate knowledge and minority 8% of sample had inadequate knowledge. The study findings shows that there was significant association with demographic variables such as age, sex, residential place, source of information at 0.05 level of significance whereas there was no association between knowledge score and demographic variable such as parent’s education, family income and mode of transportation. The result revealed that school students have adequate knowledge regarding road safety.
