A Study to Evaluate the Effectiveness of Nurse-Led Interventions on Prevention of Pressure Ulcers Among At-Risk Patients Admitted in Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital, Ram Nagar, Rajpura, District Patiala, Punjab.

Abstract


Pressure ulcers are most likely to happen when the person is confined to a bed or wheelchair for a long period of time and is relatively immobile. Nurses play a major role in prevention of pressure ulcers, as he/she is the one who early recognizes the signs of pressure ulcer during patients’ stay. After approval from the ethical committee, a quasi-experimental study was conducted on 60 patients to evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions on prevention of pressure ulcers among at-risk patients admitted in Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital. Procedure protocol and data collection tool are prepared and got validated by experts. Content validity was 98% and reliability was r = 0.743. One hundred and fifty bed-ridden patients were purposively selected, assessed for at-risk of pressure ulcer by Waterlow Risk Assessment Score, from which 60 were found to be at-risk of developing pressure ulcers. All the 60 at-risk patients were taken as sample and allocated 30 each to the experimental group and the control group. Nurse-led interventions were provided for seven days and post-test was conducted on the seventh day. Data were analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics. Results of the study show that while comparing post-test of the experimental and the control groups, 29 subjects did not developed pressure ulcer in the experimental group, while 24 subjects did not developed pressure ulcer in the control group (p < 0.05). It reveals the effectiveness of the nurse-led interventions in prevention of pressure ulcers among at-risk patients.
