Abstract

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) definition, “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely an absence of diseases or infirmity”. After independence, India reached some remarkable achievements in health care, such as eradication of poliomyelitis, reduction in diarrheal related deaths, etc. In developed countries, an average 98 out of every 1000 children born alive celebrate their fifth birthday, whereas in India, 68 out of every 1000 babies born die in the first year of life. India is a developing country with a population of 1210 and have infant and under-five mortality rates of 47and 59 per 1000 live births, respectively. In 1947, WHO launched expended programme on immunization, which is one of the most effective methods of preventing childhood diseases. With the introduction of pentavalent vaccine, the incidence of pneumonia and meningitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b (HIB) bacteria has been reduced to maximum extent. Pentavalent vaccine provides protection to a child from five life-threatening diseases – diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, hepatitis B and HIB.
