A STUDY TO ASSESS THE KNOWLEDGE AND PREVENTIVE MEASURES ADOPTED BY THE MOTHERS OF UNDER FIVE CHILDREN REGARDING WATER BORNE DISEASES IN A SELECTED AREA OF AMRITSAR (PUNJAB)

Abstract


There can be no state of positive health and well being without safe water. Safe drinking water occupies a vital place in the health care system. A close link in their growth. Provision of clean water helps to cut most of these diseases.
So the study is aimed to assess the knowledge regarding water borne diseases with a view to take necessary preventive measure by mothers of under five children in a selected area of Amritsar.
The research design was non-experimental and conducted in the month of January to February 2012 in Guru Nanak Pura, Verka, Amritsar. The sample size was 100 mothers of under five children. Purposive sampling was used. The socio-demographic data was collected through self structured interview schedule. Investigator had spent 25-30 minutes with each mother in which 3 - 5 minutes were utilized to give health education regarding water borne diseases.
The results of the study revealed that majority of mothers were having below average (49%) knowledge and majority of mothers were adopted unsatisfactory (65%) preventive measures.
Thus, to assess the knowledge and preventive measure found to be useful by distribution of guidelines or pamphlets to the mothers of under five children regarding water borne diseases.
