Retrospective Quantitative Assessment on Difference in Hearing Impairment of Users and Non-Users of Headphones

Abstract


Introduction: Hearing is one of the central functions of the body, with sight and taction. Hearing facilitate individual to collaborate with his surroundings at all zone. Human hearing elongate in oscillations ranges from 20-20,000 Hertz (Hz) whereas in magnitude from 0 to140 decibels (dB) or more. Technology is affective along day by day, leaving us all ambushed in gratification and cheerfulness with atrocious effects on health. Headphones and earphones are one such technology that is being used by the youth of today without deliberating the affiliate health concern. In contrast to these findings, this study undertakes, to provide the baseline information about the prevalence and incidence of hearing impairment due to long term use of personal listening devices (headphones). Objectives: To find the level of hearing impairment of users and non-users of headphones, to compare the hearing impairment of users and non-users of headphones, and to determine the association between hearing impairment with socio demographic variables among college going students. Method: A quantitative research approach was used, and retrospective cohort design was adopted. Sample population was students who aged between 19-25 years and headphones users & non-users selected by using stratified random sampling technique and sample size was calculated by using power analysis. Data was collected by Bio-physiological measure. It involves the collection of bio-physiological data from subjects by using the specialized equipment i.e., pure tone audiometer. Data analysis was done by using descriptive and inferential statistics using SPSS version 20. Results: Result of this present study showed that in users, the mean score obtained was 19.45 and the standard deviation was 5.59, whereas in non-users, the mean score was 18.36 and the standard deviation was 4.73. The independent ‘t’-value was 0.245 at 0.05 level of significance. As the table value (1.96) is greater than the calculated value with df (128), it inferred that there is no significant difference between users and non-users of long-term use of headphones. This study findings also showed that there is no association between hearing impairment with their selected socio- demographic variables. Conclusion: The present study concluded that an ear is an extremely sensitive and important sensory organ which help to maintain the body balance and coordination. Adolescents and youngers are the future generation of the country, so it is necessary to maintain a healthy hearing health over nation. Headphones are not only the factor that leads to hearing impairment, but various other factors may affect hearing health and leads to hearing impairment. It is important to focus over hearing health that helps to save from future consequences.
