Veeresh V. G.

Abstract

Background: Healthcare facilities need regular supply of clean and sterile instruments which helps in prevention of hospital infection. Hence it is essential for nurses who will be with patients round the clock to have knowledge, practice and good attitude of processing of instruments. Objectives: The aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of planned teaching program on knowledge, attitude and practice regarding processing of instruments among nursing officers. Method: Thirty nursing officer working in primary health center were selected by simple random sampling technique by lottery exclusion method. The study was conducted at District Training Center, Raichur. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data on knowledge, attitude and practice of processing of instruments. The collected data were analysed using SPSS 16.0 version statistical software. Results: this study found that the knowledge level of nursing officers was inadequate; however, the practice and attitude were good and positive, respectively. The planned teaching program was effective for knowledge; attitude and practice at t-value 13.17; 5.99 and 6.35, respectively, for 29 degrees of freedom at p-value ≤0.001and there was positive correlation between pre-test attitude scores and pre-test practice scores at 0.60 Interpretation and conclusion: The study concluded that the planned teaching program was effective in bringing change in knowledge score, attitude scores and practice scores. The study recommended that all the nursing officers including Group D should be given regular training, continuing workshops on processing of instruments which helps in preventing hospital infections.
