Budd–Chiari Syndrome: A Critic Review

Ananda Kudari, Chetan Ramesh Sangati

Abstract

Budd–Chiari syndrome is a very rare condition which is caused by occlusion of the hepatic veins that drain the liver. This condition is fulminant, acute, chronic, or asymptomatic. There are sever important causes, like hepatic vein thrombosis is associated with polycythemia vera, pregnancy, postpartum state, use of oral contraceptives, etc. In this condition, we can see classical triad of abdominal pain, ascites, and liver enlargement, nausea and vomiting, weight loss, vomiting blood, splenomegaly, and edema of the lower limbs. This condition can be treated with surgically like implantating balloon catheter to unblock the hepatic veins, liver transplantation, and also with pharmacologically like anti-clotting medications.
