A Descriptive Study on Knowledge, Attitude and Practices Regarding Food Hygiene among Street Food Vendors in District Mohali, Punjab

Abstract


The present study was conducted with the purpose to assess the knowledge, attitude and practices regarding food hygiene among street food vendors. The objective of this study was to assess the knowledge, attitude and practices regarding food hygiene among street food vendors and to find association between knowledge, attitude and practices regarding food hygiene among street food vendors and their selected demographic variables. Conceptual framework developed for the study was based on modified KAP model Schwartz 1976. Pilot study was conducted during month January 2014; 6 street food vendors were selected by convenient sampling technique from Dera Bassi District Mohali, Punjab. This was done to ensure the reliability of tool and feasibility of the study. The data collection procedure for the main study was carried out during the month of February 2014. Sample was explained about the purpose and method used in the study and written informed consent was taken from them. The average time taken per street food vendor to collect the data was 40–45 minutes. Sample size comprised of 60 street food vendors. Sample was selected by convenient sampling technique. The present study had three tools consisted of four sections namely firstly, demographic preform; secondly, structured questionnaire interview schedule; thirdly, Likert scale; and fourthly, section was observational checklist. The gather data was analysis by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results depicts that the overall mean knowledge score was 31.11 with SD ±5.43, the overall mean attitude score was 54.51 with ±SD 7.01 and the overall mean practices score was 21.08 with ±SD 5.86. It depicts that the street food vendors had good knowledge, neutral attitude and had average practices regarding food hygiene. The finding shows that most of the street food vendor’s (63%) had good knowledge regarding food hygiene. Majority (90%) of street food hygiene (72%) had average practices regarding food hygiene. Result also revealed that the knowledge of street food vendors was significantly associated with age (F=4.11; p=0.01), residential area (F=7.24; p=0.0015), type of vendors (t=2.44; p=0.01), previous information (t=2.32; p=0.02). While the attitude of street food vendors was associated with only previous information (t=2.35; p=0.02). Result also showed that the practices of street food vendors was associated with educational status (F=4.44; p=0.00), total monthly family income (F=9.13; p=0.00), residential area (F=3.65; p=0.03) and previous information (t=2.35; p=0.02) regarding food hygiene. The study concluded that street food vendors had good knowledge, neutral attitude and average practices regarding food hygiene. However, there is need for health education to improve the knowledge of street food vendors on food hygiene and also to be given education on hygiene practices to avoid food contamination and food poisoning.
