Abstract

Background: Sleep is an essential physiological process for humans. Medical students in most resource limited countries often report poor quality of Sleep due to changing social opportunities and increasing academic demands. However, poor quality of sleep among medical students has not been studied in Haramaya University. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of poor quality of sleep and its associated factors among medical students in Haramaya University. Material and Method: Institutional based cross sectional study design was conducted in Haramaya University College of health and medical sciences. A total of 372 medical students was selected by stratified random sampling technique and data was collected by group member from May 5 to May 14, 2017 G.C. A self-administered semi-structured questionnaire including the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) were conducted. Data was entered in to SPSS version 20 and analysed by it. The study was conducted from October-June 2016/2017 G.C. and the budget that needed to carry out this study was 3278 Ethiopian birr. Results: In this study almost one of third (37.2%) of medical students reported poor quality of sleep. The presence of perceived stressed (OR=3.587, with 95% CI, P≤0.05) was strongly associated with poor quality of sleep and also lack of support (OR: 1.596, 95% CI: P≤0.05) significantly predicted poor sleep quality. Conclusion: Poor quality of sleep is common among medical students, and high levels of stress and lack of support were significantly associated with poor sleep quality. Strategies to improve sleep quality are suggested.
