Najiya V. K.

Abstract

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of planned recreational programme on psychological well-being among elderly people, residing in selected old age home at Kasaragod. The researcher assessed the psychological well-being using rating scale for assessing psychological well-being of elderly people. After conducting a pretest, planned recreational programme including simple stretching exercise, listening to music, reading newspaper and group interacting session were conducted two hours daily for two weeks. Posttest was conducted on the 16th day using the same tool. The findings of the study were that the majority (90 percent) of the elderly people residing in old age homes had low psychological well-being. The Mean posttest psychological well-being level (84.06 ± 8.73) was greater than the Mean pretest scores of (53.73 ± 7.84). This indicates that there is a significant increase in the psychological well-being after the recreational programme intervention. The association between pretest level of psychological well-being and the selected socio-personnel variables show no significance at 0.05 level. The present study suggests the need for organized recreational activities like simple stretching exercise, listening to music, newspaper reading and group interacting session in promoting psychological well-being among the elderly people residing in old age home.
