Abstract

The aim of the study was to assess the staff nurses status in the level of knowledge, attitude and practice regarding modified electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). ECT basically involves the patient receiving an electrical shock while under anesthesia and is scientifically proven as a safe and effective form of treatment. It is specifically for use on patients who suffer from severe, treatment-resistant or unresponsive to medication, mood disorders. A descriptive research design was used and the research approach was descriptive in nature. The sample size was 100 staff nurses in selected mental hospitals Amritsar. The instruments used for the data collection were self-structured knowledge, 5 point Likert’s type attitude scale and practice questionnaire. The simple random sampling technique was adopted to select the subjects. The statistical technique used for analysis was descriptive (mean, SD), and inferential (chi-square). The result showed that for staff nurses range, maximum score, mean, standard deviation, and mean percentage of knowledge questionnaire were 5-9,13, 6.57± 2.31 and 50.54%, 5 point Likert type attitude scale were26-50,75,37.64, ±12.37, 50.19%. Practice questionnaire were 0–5, 11, 5.69, ±1.70 and 51.73, respectively. The study suggested that there was significant relationship of knowledge, attitude and practice with demographic variables regarding modified ECT among staff nurses.
