An Insight on the Depression and Adjustment Problems of Transgenders in a Selected Area, Cochin

Abstract


The purpose of the study was to assess the depression and adjustment problems among transgenders in a selected area, Cochin. The instruments used in this study were structured questionnaire to obtain socio-demographic profile, Beck depression inventory to measure depression, and Bell adjustment inventory for adults to measure adjustment problems. For assessing the depression and adjustment problems, 100 transgenders were selected by using purposive sampling method. The present study investigated the level of depression and adjustment problems on transgenders in Cochin. It is concluded that most of the transgenders have severe depression (70%): some suffer with extreme (10%) depression, 10% of them were having borderline depression, and only 5% transgenders were found normal. With regard to the adjustment problems, 75% of transgenders in Cochin are facing severe adjustment problems, 10% facing extreme adjustment problems, and only 15% have no adjustment problems.
