Prevention of Premenstrual Syndrome in Adolescence

Abstract


Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is defined as regular premenstrual physical or emotional symptoms that interfere with daily living and functioning at home and workplaces. Causes may be abnormal level of ovarian hormones like estrogen or progesterone. PMS occurs during the luteal phase of menstrual cycle symptoms including anxiety, irritability, mood swings, fatigue, palpitations, forgetfulness, fluid retention, weight gain and breast tenderness. Risk factors are that stress may precipitate condition, increasing age, history of depression, etc. Diet is a vital factor in maintaining optimum health. A dietary change influences premenstrual syndrome. And also, vitamin-rich foods are essential for relieving PMS. Minerals and carbohydrates may play an important role in the synthesis of serotonin levels. PMS is common in adolescence and symptoms may aggravate by skipping meals and eating junk food.
