Abstract

A descriptive survey study among college students assesses the prevalence of risk factors of coronary artery diseases. The objective was to find out the prevalence of modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors and their co-relation with selected demographic variables like gender, religion, and family income. Samples are students selected by the purposive sampling techniques from the college. A semi-structured questionnaire was developed to determine the prevalence of risk factor of coronary artery diseases among the students. Data were collected from six selected colleges of Ahmedabad city. The study showed that a relationship was found between gender of respondent and respondents’ tobacco use, diet risk, and family history of diabetes mellitus/hypertension/heart attack/stroke. Females had more diet risk and family history of diabetes mellitus/hypertension/heart attack/stroke/cholesterol reduction medication, while tobacco use was more in male than female. A relationship was found between family income of respondent and respondents’ obesity, alcohol use, diet risk, and family history of diabetes mellitus/hypertension/heart attack/stroke. It reveals that as the family income increases there is increase in the prevalence of obesity, alcohol use, diet risk, and family history of diabetes mellitus/hypertension/heart attack/stroke/cholesterol reduction medication among the respondents.
