Effectiveness of Psycho-Education Program for Attitude of Family Caregivers of Patient’s with Bipolar Affective Disorder, Sudan, 2017–2019

Abstract


Background: A study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of psycho-education program on family caregivers’ attitude of patients with BAD at El-Tigani El-Mahi Psychiatric Teaching Hospital, Sudan. It exhibited excellent benefits when administered to those with bipolar affective disorders, reducing both re-hospitalization rates and number of days a person spends in the hospital. Aim: The main aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of psycho-education for attitude of family caregivers of patients with bipolar affective disorders, Sudan, 2017 to 2018. Methods: This study is quasi-experimental (pre/post-tests) and hospital based. The sample consisted of (73 pre-test and 67 post-test) family caregivers who were available at the hospital during the period of the data collection. The sample was who totally care the patients. Data was collected by the use of structured questionnaire to assess the family caregivers’ attitude by Likert scale; data was analyzed by Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 20 and presented with figures and tables. Results: The study revealed that the attitude before psycho-education according to total mean scoring was 3.1 which was negative. The attitude score increased after psycho-education and was positive according to total mean score 5.0. Conclusion and recommendation: Psycho-education will improve the attitude among the family caregivers of the patients with Bipolar Affective Disorders (BAP). The recommended primary health care centers and medical care centres can make a positive contribution through psycho-education relapse prevention and physical care by developing attitude of family caregivers.
