Non-Drug Management of Restless Legs Syndrome or Willis–Ekbom Disease

R. Regi Bai, Ramesh Kumari, Ramesh Kumari

Abstract

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a condition which causes an uncontrollable urge to move legs because of an uncomfortable sensation. It begins or worsens during periods of rest or inactivity, is partially or totally relieved by movements, and is exacerbated or occurs at night and in the evening. RLS sufferers represent 2%–3% of the population in the western countries. RLS, also known as Willis–Ekbom disease, can begin at any age and generally worsens as age increases. In most cases, RLS is idiopathic. Supportive criteria include a family history, diabetes and iron deficiency. It can disrupt sleep, which interferes with daily activities. Simple self-care steps and lifestyle changes may help relieve symptoms. RLS treatment begins with the elimination of triggering factors and iron supplementation when deficient. Medications also help many people with RLS.
