A Study to Assess the Effectiveness of a Planned Teaching Programme on Effective Documentation and Reporting Techniques for Nursing Personnel in Terms of Knowledge in Selected Hospital of Kerala

Abstract

Background: Nursing documentation is essential for good clinical communication.
Appropriate documentation provides an accurate reflection of nursing assessments, changes
in clinical state, care provided and pertinent patient information to support the
multidisciplinary team to deliver great care. The present study was carried out to find out the
effectiveness of planned teaching programme on effective documentation and reporting
techniques among nursing personnel of selected hospital of Malappuram district, Kerala.
Objectives of the study: Objectives of the study were to prepare and administer planned
teaching programme on effective documentation and reporting techniques for nursing
personnel and to assess and evaluate the knowledge of nursing personnel regarding effective
documentation and reporting techniques before and after the administration of planned
teaching programme on effective documentation and reporting techniques. Methods and
materials: Pre-experimental one group pre-test and post-test research design was used to
conduct this study at selected hospital of Malappuram district, Kerala among 50 nursing
personnel. Convenient sampling technique was used to select the study sample. Data was
collected by using the structured knowledge questionnaire and demographical variable
Performa. Results: Most of the samples belong to the age group of 20–30 years (70%). More
number of samples are staff nurses (76%). Majority of samples (48%) are having educational
qualification as B.Sc. Nursing or PCBSc, followed by GNM (42%). Highest number of
samples (80%) are having less than 10 years of work experience. The mean post-test
knowledge score of nursing personnel (16.46) is higher than their mean pre-test knowledge
score (10.46) with a mean difference of 06. The calculated “t” value (19.36) is higher than
the table “t” value (2.40) for the df 49 and it was found statistically significant at 0.01 level
of significance. This shows that the planned teaching programme is effective in enhancing the
knowledge of nursing personnel regarding effective documentation and reporting technique.
Conclusion: There should be continued enlightenment programme in the form of public
seminars to provide awareness to nurses about the importance of documenting patient’s care.
Leaders of the nursing profession should emphasize on the importance of documentation and
train their subordinates properly.
