Effect of Structured Teaching Programme on Knowledge and Knowledge on Practice of Menstrual Hygiene among School Children at a Selected School in Coimbatore

Abstract


A study was conducted to assess the effect the Effect of Structured Teaching Programme on Knowledge and Knowledge on Practice of Menstrual Hygiene among School Children. Using purposive sampling technique, 39 school children between the age group of 11 to 14 years who met the inclusion criteria were selected from the Corporation Girls High School at Sidhapudur in Coimbatore. Pre experimental one group pretest and posttest design was used for the study. A self-administered questionnaire was given to the students on aspects related to knowledge and knowledge on practice regarding menstrual hygiene. The subjects were informed about the purpose of the study and were given 30 minutes to complete the questionnaire. After the pretest, a structured teaching Programme was administered on aspects related to Menstrual Hygiene. After three days, a posttest was conducted using the same questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Paired ‘t’ test was used to find the effect between the pre and posttest. Findings revealed that, the mean pretest scores of knowledge on menstrual hygiene were 8.10 and 9.56 with a standard deviation of 1.84 and 1.31. The calculated value was 4.465. The mean pretest scores of knowledge on practice of menstrual hygiene were 14.33 and 16.13 with a standard deviation of and 1.77 and 2. The calculated’ value was 3.99. The results revealed that, there was a significant improvement in the knowledge and knowledge on practice among the school children regarding menstrual hygiene after the education. Hence it was concluded that the structured teaching Programme was effective.
