Assessment of Knowledge and Self-Management Practices of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients visiting Medicine OPD, Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital, Faridkot

Abstract


INTRODUCTION:
Diabetes Mellitus is a silent disease and is now recognized as one of the fastest growing threats to public health in almost all countries of the world. It is also called the “disease of Prosperity
OBJECTIVES:
1. To assess the level of knowledge regarding Type 2 DM in Type 2 DM patients.
2. To find out the self management practices of the Type 2 DM patients.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: A descriptive, cross-sectional survey was conducted. Purposive sampling was used to select 100 patients with Type 2 DM. Self-structured interview schedule was prepared. The data were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics.
RESULTS: Showed that 49% subjects had inadequate knowledge regarding DM. Highest mean percentage (64.5%) score was found in the aspects of problems with DM where as least score was found in aspects of care of DM i.e. (40.5%). In self management practices, most of the subjects (63%) had inadequate physical activity in DM. Majority of the subjects (46%) were often using diabetic diet, 56% subjects sometimes did meticulous personal care, 57% were often adhering to prescribed treatment, 69% subjects were sometimes able to manage their stress, 43% subjects were rarely showed interest in health learning related to their disease and 81% subjects were always able to manage their risk factors in DM. The study recommended that there should be specific diabetic nurse and diabetic room for the diabetic patients for counseling of patients regarding their disease, its management and prevention of complications.
