Abstract

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” The word “adolescence” is derived from the Latin adolescere (to grow up). Adolescence is therefore literally the period of growing up and becoming an adult. In western society the term is now mainly used to describe the period from about 12 to about 18 or 19 years, or the period of development from childhood to young adulthood. Drug is a substance which may have medicinal, intoxicating, performance enhancing or other effects when taken or put into a human body. Drug dependence is defined as a state of sporadic or chronic intoxication damaging to the individual and the society produce by the frequent intake of habit starting drugs. Objectives: To assess the existing knowledge regarding health hazards and prevention of selected substance abuse among PUC students. To evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding health hazards and prevention of selected substance abuse among PUC students. To find out association between the pre and posttest knowledge score of PUC students with selected socio-demographic variables. Research design: Pre- experimental design with one group pretest–posttest design. Subjects: The participants were 60 PU students at PU College at Bangalore. Method: Nonprobability convenient sampling technique. Data collection tool: A structured knowledge questionnaire was used to collect data from subjects. Data analysis: The obtained data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics and interpreted in terms of objectives and hypothesis of the study. The level of significance was set at 0.05. Results: The majority the table presents the association of level of association between demographic variables and pretest knowledge level on health hazards and prevention of selected substance abuse. The chi-square test was carried out to determine the association between the and pretest knowledge level on health hazards and prevention of selected substance abuse and socio demographic variable such as age, gender, religion, parents education status, no of siblings, family status, family history of substance abuse, exposure of previous knowledge, source of information. Out of which age group (x2= 6.73*), gender (x2 = 4.16), dietary pattern were found significant associated with (5.40*) level, and family history of substance abuse were found (6.4%) and the rest of demographic variable were not significant. Hence research hypothesis H2 Proved and accepted for age, gender, dietary pattern, family history for substance abuse adopted for adolescents and rejected for others. It is evident that risk is better influenced by age, gender, education status of parents, place of residence, family type, no. of siblings, source for information adopted for adolescents. Conclusion: Among 60 adolescents under the study, the findings shows that the level of knowledge the above table shows that out of 60 adolescents, 0.0% had inadequate knowledge regarding health hazard of substance abuse and its prevention. (36.7 %) had the moderate knowledge regarding substance abuse, (63.3%) have adequate knowledge and none of them follow under the risk.
