An Overview of Diabetes Mellitus; Types, Complications, and Management

Abstract


There are a good number of diseases that are present in our society that consume out health. These diseases may be communicable and non-communicable. Among later lifestyle diseases are growing at an alarming rate. Among these lifestyle related diseases are diabetes mellitus. This disease is primarily said to be characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in secretion of insulin, insulin action or both. Earlier it was considered by people to be a disease of urban areas but latest statistics has revealed that it affects rural population in the same manner, so there is an urgent need for mass campaigns, awareness programmes and other IEC activities to prevent occurrence of diabetes and also to control it.
