Abstract

Tobacco smoking contains chemicals that are harmful to the smokers and non-smokers. Of the more than 7000 chemicals in tobacco smoke, at least 250 are known to be harmful. Among the 250 known harmful chemicals in tobacco smoking, at least 69 can cause cancer. The aim of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of video-assisted teaching programme on knowledge regarding ill effects of tobacco use among high school children. The objectives of the study were to determine the knowledge among high school children regarding the ill effects of tobacco use, evaluate the effectiveness of video-assisted teaching programme on knowledge regarding ill effects of tobacco use among high school children, compare the knowledge regarding ill effects of tobacco use among experimental and control groups, and find out the association between the knowledge regarding ill effects of tobacco use among high school children with selected socio-demographic variables. The research approach adopted was quantitative approach. After obtaining the consent from Meenakshi Vilasam Higher Secondary School, Nagercovil, pre-test and video-assisted teaching programme are conducted on the same day and post-test on the seventh day of the pre-test. The data thus collected were analysed using differential and inferential statistics. The analysis revealed that the post-test knowledge score was significantly higher than the pre-test knowledge score. The calculated Z-value 23.372 was greater than the table value (2.6), hence the effect was proved to be significant. There was no significant relationship between pre-test knowledge scores and selected demographic variables likes age, gender, religion, residence, type of family, educational status, income, previous knowledge, and source of information. To sum up, the video-assisted teaching programme was shown effective in improving the knowledge regarding ill effects of tobacco use among high school children.
