Abstract

A quasi-experimental study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme regarding the knowledge about cataract among the patients admitted in ophthalmic ward of Dr. Somervell Memorial CSI Medical College and Hospital, Karakonam. Objectives of the study: (1). To assess the knowledge level regarding cataract and its management among cataract patients in the ophthalmic ward. (2.) To determine the association between level of awareness of cataract patients with selected demographic variables. (3). To assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme A wide review of literature provided the investigators to formulate the tool for the collection of data. It includes demographic variables and structured questionnaire. The study was conducted at Dr. Somervell Memorial CSI Hospital, Karakonam. We have selected 20 cataract patients by using convenient sampling technique and assessed their knowledge regarding cataract with relevant questionnaire before and after the health education. Data collected were analysed by using descriptive and inferential statistics, percentage, mean, chi-square and t-tests. The samples indicate the characteristics of cataract patients as follows: 65% of them were in the age of <70 years and 35% of them were in the age of >70 years. 35% of the samples were males and 65% of them were females. Educated among them were 70% and uneducated were 30%. 50% of them were employed and 50% of them were unemployed. 50% of them had the previous history of surgery and 50% of them had no history of surgery. Association between pre-test and post-test knowledge scores about definition of cataract was 15%, whereas in post-test, it was 50%. In pre-test, the percentage score of knowledge about the causes of cataract was 65%, whereas in post-test, it was 100%; in pre-test, the knowledge score about the risk factors was 55%, and in post-test, it was 100%. The pre-test percentage score of knowledge about clinical features was 60%, and in post-test, it was 95%. In pre-test, the percentage score of knowledge about diagnosis of cataract was 95%, whereas in post-test, it was 100%; in pre-test, the knowledge score about the contraindication of cataract surgery was 25%, and in post-test, it was 30%. In pre-test, the percentage score knowledge about management of cataract was 69%, and in post-test was 94%. The pre-test percentage score of knowledge about complication of cataract was 38%, and in post-test, it was 60%. It shows that there is a greater significance in the knowledge gained regarding cataract after health education as evident by the t-test score. The significant variables are previous history of surgery, sex, education and occupation.
