Abstract

Introduction: Sleep is the basic human need for all individuals; it helps restoration of functions, refreshing the ideas and feeling well after awakening, but the sleeping patterns are disturbed in hospitalized patients, especially immobilized patients. So many therapies are available to improve the sleep quality, but all therapies are not provided to the hospitalized patients. This study was undertaken to assess the effectiveness of partial evening bath among immobilized orthopaedic patients at Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital (GGSMCH), Faridkot, Punjab. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of partial evening bath among immobilized orthopaedic patients at GGSMCH, Faridkot, Punjab. Material and methods: Experimental approach with two-group pre- and post-test design was used. Conceptual framework for the study was adopted from Ludwig Von Bertalanffy’s (1968) general system model. Convenient sampling with random assignment, 35 subjects were selected in experimental group and 35 in conventional group. Subjects in experimental group had received partial evening bath intervention. The standardized scale, Verran Snyder Halpern sleep scale, was used to assess the quality of sleep. Descriptive statistics and independent and paired t-tests, and chi-square were used to analyse data. Results: The results revealed that there was a significant reduction in disturbance of sleep score after intervention in experimental group and the effective sleep score was increased in experimental group. Conclusion: Partial evening bath is a non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical, and effective method to reduce disturbance of sleep in immobilized orthopaedic patients
