Risk of Osteoporosis and Knowledge on Prevention of Osteoporosis in Premenopausal Women residing in Bhutramatti Village, Belagavi, Karnataka

Abstract


A descriptive study was conducted to assess the risk of osteoporosis and knowledge on prevention of osteoporosis in 30 premenopausal women residing in Bhutramatti village, Belagavi, Karnataka. The objectives of the study were to assess the risk of osteoporosis in premenopausal women by using structured premenopausal osteoporosis risk assessment checklist, to assess the knowledge on prevention of osteoporosis in premenopausal women by using structured knowledge questionnaire, and to find the association between knowledge scores and selected demographic variables. Convenient sampling technique was used to select the samples for the study. Data was collected by using structured premenopausal osteoporosis risk assessment checklist and structured knowledge questionnaire. The study revealed that majority of the premenopausal women 19 (63.33%) were at moderate risk of osteoporosis, 6 (20%) were at high risk of osteoporosis and 5 (16.66%) were at low risk of osteoporosis. The study also revealed that majority of the premenopausal women 21 (70%) had moderate knowledge, 3 (10%) had adequate knowledge and 6 (20%) had inadequate knowledge regarding prevention of osteoporosis, and there was no statistically significant association between knowledge score and selected demographic variables.
