Abstract

The objectives of the project were to assess and compare the pre-test and post-test knowledge about the complementary feeding among mothers in experimental and control groups, and also to find out the relationship of pre-test and post-test knowledge about complementary feeding in experimental and control groups with selected socio-demographic variables. An interventional research design (non-randomized pre-test and post-test control group) was utilized to achieve the objectives. Consecutive sampling technique was used to select 100 mothers of infants from Paediatric OPD, GMCH-32, Chandigarh. Data were collected from the study subjects by proforma made by researchers (self-structured questionnaire) consisting of Part A: to collect the socio-demographic data, and Part B: to assess the knowledge about complementary feeding. The approval was taken from the research and ethical committee of the institution. The data analysis was done by calculating mean, standard deviation, frequency, percentage, t-test, and chi-square, where p < 0.05 was considered statistical significance. The results found that 83.3% of mothers had average knowledge, 13.3% above average knowledge and only 3.3% of mothers had below average knowledge. The findings show the level of knowledge score of mothers in experimental group. The pre-test knowledge score reveals that 80% of the mothers had average knowledge, 14% of the mothers had good knowledge and 6% of mothers had poor knowledge. The post-test knowledge score reveals that 54% of the mothers had good knowledge, 46% of the mothers had average knowledge and nil percentage of mothers had poor knowledge. The mean knowledge score of control group in post-test is 10.54±2.40 and pre-test is 9.76±2.78, whereas the mean knowledge score of experimental group in post-test is 12.8±2.19 and pre-test is 10.50±2.29. To conclude, experimental group showed more knowledge than control group. Hence, structured teaching program was found effective in gaining knowledge regarding complementary feeding.
