Abstract

The researcher for the study purpose intented to measure the self-esteem of adolescents, perceived maternal parenting styles and the impact of maternal parenting style on self-esteem of adolescents. The perceived maternal parenting styles are explained and categorised into the four parenting styles based on Maccoby & Martin’s parenting style model. The Rosenstock’s health belief model was adopted to study the impact of maternal parenting styles on self-esteem of adolescents. The perceived barriers and benefits based on the influence of maternal parenting style on self-esteem of adolescents are categorised as low, moderate and high self-esteem. The researcher also intented to assess the association of identified demographic variables on self-esteem of adolescents. Pearson’s correlation was statistically used to find the correlation between maternal parenting styles and self-esteem of adolescents and it was found that maternal parenting styles are both positively and negatively correlated to self-esteem of adolescents. Parenting is an area of concern in child and adolescent psychology that affects individuals throughout the lifespan. The responsibility of preparing young ones for life in society rests mainly with parents.
