Parental Practices Regarding Mental Health of School Children

Abstract


Background: Problems related to mental health and behavior are common in most of the countries and children suffering with any of the mental health related problems are often exposed to social isolation and poor quality of life. Aims and objectives: To assess parental practices regarding mental health among children and to find association between parental practices regarding mental health of children with selected demographic variables. Materials and methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 60 parents of school going children in Haldwani block, Uttarakhand. Nonprobability purposive sampling technique was adopted and structured self-reported practice questionnaire was used. Results: It was found that about 89.87% of parents had good parental practice regarding mental health in school children. There was significant association found between mental health of children and parents’ occupation (χ² = 2.89, p = <0.05). Conclusion: Mental health is as important as child’s physical health is totally dependent on it. Children are priceless resources of our country and the goal of every parent should be to raise happy and well-adjusted children. The study concludes that parents have good practices 89.87% regarding parenting still there is lack in patience and time spent with children which directly and indirectly affects their behavior.
