A Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Acupressure on Lactation among Immediate Postnatal Mothers at Selected Hospitals at Kanyakumari District

Abstract


Lactation and breast feeding are essential for the mother and the neonate in the early period of life to protect and promote health. Considering this the investigator used acupressure to promote lactation among immediate postnatal mothers. Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of acupressure on lactation among immediate postnatal mothers in selected hospitals Kanyakumari District. Method: A Quasi-experimental one group pretest posttest design was adapted for the study.125 immediate postnatal mothers who met the inclusion criteria were selected using purposive sampling from C.S.I. Hospital Neyyoor. Paired‘t’ test was used to evaluate the effectiveness of acupressure on lactation. Chi square test was used to find out the association between posttest breast feeding with selected demographic variables. Results: In the pretest, out of 125 immediate postnatal mothers 104 (83%) had moderate feeding, 21 (17%) had inadequate feeding. After the intervention in posttest III 90 (72%) had adequate feeding, 35 (28%) had moderate feeding. The ‘t’ value on day 1 were 13.98, day 2 were 15.08 and day 3 were 15.76 was significant at P<0.05. This showed that acupressure was effective in promoting lactation among immediate postnatal mothers. Conclusion: The findings of the study concluded that acupressure was effective in promoting lactation among immediate postnatal mothers.
