The Risk Factors Contributing to Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome among Adolescent Girls

Abstract


Adolescent’s health plays an important role in a nations health conditions. In India 35% of the adolescents are suffering from PCOS. The study aims at determine the risk factors for PCOS and to find out the association between risk factors and selected socio demographic factors. Quantitative approach; descriptive survey, non-experimental design was adopted for this study. A total of 100 sample of adolescent girls between the age group of 16-19 years. In this study population is adolescent girls in selected higher secondary schools in Kannur district. Purposive technique was adopted in the study. A semi structured interview were scheduled to collect the socio- demographic data, biophysical parameters assessment (height, weight, BMI)and also a self-administered questionnaire including five domains like dietary factors, physical factors, hormonal influence, obesity, hereditary factors. Data were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. In this study there is an association between area of living and consumption of fast food ,habit of doing exercise, type of game they prefer, age of menarche, family history of obesity and infertility ,age, skipping of breakfast and also preference of food. By observing the result we concluded that new generation adolescent girls are at risk of PCOS and this may contribute to other major health problems. Therefore the researcher has pivotal role in creating awareness among adolescent girls for the modification of dietary factors, physical exercise lifestyle and prevention of complications.
