Abstract

Nurses working in neonatal intensive care unit require competence in neonatal resuscitation; the challenges experienced by healthcare providers during this procedure are unique due to different causes of cardio-respiratory arrest. The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge and practice regarding neonatal resuscitation among staff nurses working in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Study design was descriptive research design; samples were selected by means of purposive sampling design. Settings of the study were NICU, Pandit B.D. Sharma PGIMS, Rohtak. Sample size was 60. Data were collected through questionnaire for assessing the knowledge and checklist to assess the practice. Results revealed that majority of the samples 35 (58.3%) had moderate knowledge, 16 (26.7%) had inadequate knowledge and only 9 (15%) were having adequate knowledge about neonatal resuscitation. With regard to practice level, most of the samples 43 (71.7%) had good practice, 16 (26.67%) were having average practice, and 1 (1.7%) was having poor practice regarding neonatal resuscitation. With regard to level of association between knowledge and sample characteristic, the study findings revealed sample characteristics like age and experience in NICU were statistically significant. Study findings revealed that nurses working in NICU need regular education and training to enhance their neonatal resuscitation knowledge and practice.
