Assessment of the knowledge on Assisted Reproductive Technology methods among staff nurses working in WCH, JIPMER, Puducherry

ABSTRACT

Infertility is the inability to achieve pregnancy after an unprotected sex for one year. Both male and female infertility is common in India. Awareness of infertility risk factors is an essential first step to safeguard future fertility. Whereas several studies have examined university students’ awareness of female fertility and related risk factors, the topic of male infertility has not been well examined. The objective of this study is to assess young men and women’s awareness, knowledge and perceptions of infertility, male and female infertility risk factors and Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART). A quantitative study was conducted among staff nurses one twenty six registered staff nurses working at JIPMER . The subjects were selected based on convenient sampling technique. The knowledge assessing questionnaire was prepared and administered to the participants. The statistical differences of knowledge score between level of knowledge and demographic variable were analyzed using inferential statistics. The study showed that 17.3% of nurses were having adequate knowledge and 56.3% of participants are having moderate knowledge and 26.2% staff nurses are having inadequate knowledge. The study analysis showed that there was a significant relation between the staff nurses knowledge and year of experience, according to ‘p’value(<0.05). But there was no significant association between knowledge score of staff nurses and any other demographic variables .The study revealed the knowledge regarding Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) methods among staff nurses working in WCH block at JIPMER. 17.3% of staff nurses are having adequate knowledge ,56.3% of participants are having moderate knowledge and 26.2% staff nurses are having inadequate knowledge.
