Effectiveness of Skin-to-Skin Contact (SSC) on Physiological Parameters among Mothers and their Newborn

P. Padmavathi

Abstract

Skin-to-skin contact (SSC) promotes safety, stability and well-being, and has long-lasting implications for the mother–baby pair. It facilitates physical and hormonal changes in both mother and baby that prepare them for breastfeeding and for the beginning of their relationship together. Statement of the problem: Effectiveness of SSC on physiological parameters among mothers and their newborns. Methodology: The research design adopted was non-equivalent design. The study conducted at in Government Head Quarters Hospital, Erode and TPN Hospital, Erode, Tamil Nadu, India. The study was conducted on 30 mothers and their newborns (15 in Control group and 15 in experimental group) during the third stage of labour. Experimental group received SSC and control group received hospital routine care. The levels of physiological parameters were assessed in both groups. Results: The study concluded that SSC was more effective in improving physiological parameters among mothers during the third stage labour. (Physiological parameters scores – experimental group I, mean = 16.67, SD = 0.96 and control group, mean = 9.2, SD = 0.34 and unpaired ‘t’ value 9.45, significant at P < 0.05).
