A Descriptive Research Study to Assess the Knowledge and Attitude about Menstruation and Menstrual Hygiene in Adolescent Girls (13-18 Years) in Selected Rural School at Ahmedabad, Gujarat

Abstract


Menstruation is a part of female reproductive cycle that starts when a girl becomes sexually mature at the time of puberty. Menstruation is a women’s monthly vaginal bleeding, it is the shedding of the lining of uterus. Menstrual bleeding from the uterus takes place through the small opening in the cervix and passes out of body through the vagina. Normally, menstruation period lasts from three to five days. An evaluative research design and total 100 samples were selected for the study. Adolescent girls were selected by using random sampling. A structured knowledgeable questionnaire was used to assess the knowledge and attitude of adolescent girls (13–18 years) about menstruation and menstrual hygiene. The study was done in selected rural schools of Ahmedabad. The data was analyzed by using evaluator and interventional statistics. The overall knowledge regarding the knowledge of menstruation among the adolescent girls is inadequate 30%, satisfactory 50% and adequate 20%. The overall knowledge regarding the menstrual hygiene among adolescent girls is inadequate 20%, satisfactory 40% and adequate 40%. The overall attitude regarding menstrual knowledge and hygiene among adolescent girls is inadequate 50%, satisfactory 30% and adequate 20%.
