Abstract

The breast is the emotional symbol of a woman’s pride in her sexuality and motherliness. For many women, mastectomy is a common form of breast cancer treatment, and it constitutes threats to female beauty, sexuality and femininity. Restoration of physical appearance is very important for the women who has undergone mastectomy. The objectives of the study were to assess the pre-test and post-test level of shoulder pain, to find out the effectiveness of Post Mastectomy Exercises and to associate the level of shoulder pain with selected demographic variables. Pre-experimental with one group pretest-posttest design was used in this study. The study was conducted in International Cancer Centre, Neyyoor at Kanyakumari District. The samples consisted of 40 mastectomy patients and selected by purposive sampling technique. The tools used for data collection were Demographic Proforma and Numerical Pain Rating Scale. The study revealed that, the pre-test mean score of pain was 7.575±1.116, post-test was 3.525±1.414 and the mean difference of pain level was 4.050, ‘t’=14.22 and it was statistically highly significant at P<0.0001 level.
