A Descriptive Study to Assess Birth Preparedness and Preference towards Delivery among Antenatal Women in Civil Hospital Tarn Taran, Punjab

Abstract


Pregnancy is the vital event in the life of a women, it needs special attention from the time of conception to the postnatal stage but due to lack of knowledge, mothers were ignorant about birth preparation. Many of them in last trimester were unprepared for the great event of their lives. Many of postnatal mothers verbalized that their child birth experience was “terrible”. Hence the investigators felt that these mothers should be educated on birth preparedness so as to enable them to have joyful and healthy child birth experience. A descriptive study to assess birth preparedness practice and preference towards delivery among antenatal women in Civil Hospital Tarn Taran, Punjab by using convenience sampling technique, the finding of present study shows that 36% mothers are not prepared, 28% mothers are moderately prepared, 22% are well prepared and 14% mothers are very well prepared. In regard to preference toward delivery majority 32% of antenatal mother prefer normal vaginal delivery and 34% of them select government hospital as place of delivery, 44% want registered nurses to conduct their delivery and 32% choose mother in law as their birth companion. Hence it is further recommended to do this study on huge sample for better generalization. Moreover, an exploratory study can be done.
