Role of Vitamin C on Wound Healing

Saratha Arumugam

Abstract

Vitamin C is otherwise called ascorbic acid. Vitamin C is required for the synthesis of collagen, a fibrous protein that helps reinforce the connective tissues that hold together the structures of the body. It is also a highly effective antioxidant protecting cells from damage by free radicals. The five nutrients that are essential for wound healing are Protein, Vitamin C, Zinc, Carbohydrate & Vitamin A. Vitamin C is often aligned with wound healing because of its role in collagen formation. Vitamin C is a co-factor in proline and lysine hydroxylation, a necessary stem in the formation of collagen. Vitamin C also is required for proper immune system function, a consideration in patients with open wounds.
