Correlation between Stress and Blood Pressure among Postmenopausal Women

Abstract


The present study was aimed to assess the correlation between stress and blood pressure among postmenopausal women in a selected ward of Thannermukkam panchayat. The objectives of the present study were to assess the stress among postmenopausal women, to assess the blood pressure among postmenopausal women, to find the correlation between stress and blood pressure among postmenopausal women and to find the association of stress among postmenopausal women and selected demographic variables. The study is based on health belief model. Quantitative nonexperimental approach and correlational survey design was adopted for the study. The sample size of thirty post-menopausal women residing in seventh ward of Thannermukkam panchayat was selected by using convenience sampling technique. The data collection instruments used in the study were structured questionnaire for sociodemographic data, Sheldon Cohen’s perceived stress scale to assess the stress level and sphygmomanometer used to screen the blood pressure. The data collection done in three consecutive days. The data analysis done with the help of spss 23 new. The findings revealed that majority (86.7) of the postmenopausal women are under moderate stress whereas only 13.3% are in low stress and none of them are in high perceived category. About 66.7% of postmenopausal women who have hypertension whereas only 33.3% of them are normotensive. There is a moderate correlation between stress level and blood pressure (r=0.451, p=0.012).And there was a significant association between type of menopause and stress ( =5.83, p=0.01).
