A Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Awareness Programme on Knowledge Regarding Hazards and Safe Disposal of Electronic Waste among Adults Who Are Residing in Kalitheerthalkuppam at Puducherry

Abstract

Electronic waste popularly known as E-waste consists of all waste from electronic goods and electrical appliances which have reached end-of-life period or are no longer fit for their original intended use and are destined for recovery, recycling or disposal. The electronic goods are classified under three major heads: White goods: Household appliances, Brown goods: TVs, camcorders, cameras, Grey goods: Computers, printers, fax machines, scanners etc. Aim of study: To assess the knowledge and provide awareness about electronic waste and its disposal among the adults who are residing in Kalitheerthalkuppam at Pondicherry. Material and method: quantitative research approach with pre-experimental one group pre-test and post-test research design was adopted. Total 100 samples were taken by using systematic random sampling techniques to identify knowledge about the electronic waste disposal. Self-developed Questionnaire was used to collect the data. Results: the result showed that, out of 100 samples, them 44 (44%) belongs the age group of 20–30 years, 37 (37%) of them were belongs to 31–40 years, 14 (14%) of them were belongs to above 41–50 years and 5 (5%) of them belongs to above 50 years. (64%) belongs to male and 36 (36%) of them were belongs to female. Religion shows that majority of them 96 (96%) belongs to Hindu and 4 (4%) of them were Christian, and 0 (0%) were Muslim. Marital status shows that majority of them 69 (69%) belongs to unmarried and 31 (31%) were married. According to the knowledge, out of 100 samples in pre-test 76 (76%) of them had inadequate knowledge, were 24 (24%) of them had moderate knowledge whereas in post-test 22 (22%) of them had moderately knowledge and 78 (78%) of them were adequate knowledge.
