: The study aimed to assess the knowledge and practice on protocol-based nursing on Insertion of intravenous line cannula among nurses working in selected hospitals at Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu
Materials and Methods: Quantitative descriptive survey approach with a Nonexperimental descriptive design was used. Tool used for data collection was Structured Questionaries to assess the level of knowledge and check list to assess the nurses practice on protocol-based nursing on insertion of IV cannula. The data collected were analyzed by means of descriptive and inferential statistics.
Result: Among 20 samples, Majority of 85% (17) nurses had moderately adequate knowledge, 15% (3) nurses had adequate knowledge. About 70% (14) nurses are not practicing and 30% (6) nurses are practicing protocol-based insertion of IV cannulation. There was a positive correlation between knowledge and practice of protocol-based nursing on insertion of IV-line cannulation. There was no significant association between knowledge with age, sex, experience, and income. But there was significant association between knowledge with education.
Conclusion: Cannulation is a skill learnt by many but not always used in practice and this is often because there is a lack of supervision available by an experienced practitioner. The nurses could explore their knowledge regarding protocol-based nursing on insertion of IV cannulation and practice in the clinical area to prevent complicationsReferences
