Socio Demographic Profile of Selfie Taking College Students

Background: Smartphones have become a necessary evil in our lives. Selfies have become the newest technological fad to take over the youth, due to the wide and easy availability of mobile phones and internet. There is paucity of scientific data on selfies taking behavior of youth in general, and from India in particular. Aim: This study aimed to assess the selfie taking behavior and its relationship with selected demographic variables among college going population in Faridkot, Punjab. Materials and Methods: Quantitative, descriptive research approach with cross-sectional survey design was used to assess the selfie taking behavior in 300 conveniently selected college students of Faridkot, Punjab by using socio-demographic data sheet and selfie-taking behavior questionnaire. Findings: Study found that mean age of the subject was 20.74 years and maximum were females (89.7%). A 5.3% of the subjects were taking >15 number of selfies per day and preferred to took selfies with their friends (41.3%). More than two third (70%) of subjects upload selfies on social sites and Whatsapp was the most preferred site to post the selfies (77.3%). Conclusion: Study concluded that selfie taking is popular among college students and is now going to be a big problem. This study gives us an insight into the youth's viewpoint towards selfies. Early interventions are required for selfie takers to avoid psychological and physical problems in future. Behavioral addictions such as selfies need more focused research in the future.References
