Abstract

Background: Poor knowledge and skill retention following Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training for nursing and nurse practitioner students has been documented over the past two decades. ACLS training is mandatory for nursing staff and is important as nurses often identifies the victims of in-hospital cardiac arrest. Training nursing students in ACLS will helps in improving the manpower resources in the cardiac emergency settings. Aim: to evaluate the effectiveness of ACLS training in term of knowledge and practice among B. Sc Nursing final year students. Methodology: Pre-Experimental research design was adopted in this study to evaluate the effectiveness of ACLS training. Study was conducted in Ved Nursing College – Panipat among 60 B. Sc Nursing final year students. Samples were recruited for the study through non-probability convenience sampling technique. Researcher constructed knowledge questionnaire to collect information regarding knowledge and observation check list was used for assessing practice. ACLS training programme was given to the students followed by that subject’s knowledge and practice were assessed during seventh day from the day on which ACLS training programme was administered. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for analysing the data. Results: The pre-test mean and standard deviation score regarding knowledge was 12.47 + 1.171. the post-test mean and standard deviation score regarding knowledge was 23.40 + 0.807. the paired ‘t’ test score was 60.468 at degree of freedom 59. Which indicates ACLS training programme was effective in terms of increasing knowledge of B. Sc (N) final year students. Similarly, regarding practice, the pre-test practice mean and standard deviation score was 7.50 + 1.050. the post-test practice mean and standard deviation score was 12.38 + 0.804. the paired ‘t’ test score was 27.934 at degree of freedom 59. Which shows the ACLS training programme was effective on improving the practice of B. Sc (N) final year students regarding ACLS. Conclusion: Imparting knowledge to all B. Sc Nursing Final year students regarding advanced cardiac life support is essential to improve their knowledge and enhance their skills. Regular training should be given to all the students during their course of the study. This will create good manpower resources in cardiac emergency area to save life’s of many client’s who were very critical.
