Abstract

Background: hypertension constitutes a major public health problem in the Middle East and other countries. There should be an effective management via introduction of preventive and health education measures. The main aim of this study was to identify the risk factors of hypertension among refugees in the Gaza Strip.

Materials and methods: A case-control study design was adopted to conduct this study within the period June – November 2020. The study sample consisted of 116 hypertensive patients and 116 controls, selected by systematic random sampling. Data were collected by validated interview questionnaire which consisted of several domains. Matching was done by patients’ age, sex, and residency place. Data analysis was done using SPSS using different statistical tests and binary logistic regression. Ethical issues were considered strictly, and the protection of study participants has been ensured.

Results: The study revealed that the risk factors of hypertension include BMI, and triglycerides, while the [protective factors against HTN include eating fruits.

The study results revealed that eating fruits decrease the risk of HTN by 83.0%. in addition, salt increase the risk of occurrence of HTN. Moreover, those who are sleep more than 8 hours daily have decrease the risk of HTN 49.66 times than who sleep less than 4 hours daily. Those who have higher level of triglycerides have increase the risk of HTN by 0.220 times than who have lower level of triglycerides.

Conclusion & Recommendations: risk factors of hypertension include, adding salt to food during eating, sleeping hours, and TG. Health education programs should be targeted for the population in extensive periods and should reach most of the population who are in “out-to reach”, this is to make sure that all the community receive health education program.
