Everyone should lead a conscious lifestyle that prevents disease as, individual lifestyle is central
to the development of chronic diseases. Living healthy lifestyle means taking responsibility for

humankind. Among the diseases CAD has become an epidemic and chronic increasing number
of deaths among the younger age group affecting the productivity of economy. The purpose of
this study was to evaluate the efficacy of Self-Instructional Module (SIM) on knowledge
regarding lifestyle modification to maintain heart healthy in cardiac patients. A quantitative, pre-
experimental, one group pretest posttest design was selected for the study. The participants were
60 cardiac patients from selected hospitals in Madurai. A non-probability random sampling
technique was used to select the samples for the study. A structured knowledge questionnaire
was used to collect data from the participants. Data were analyzed using both descriptive and
inferential statistics. In the pretest 63.33% of the respondents had inadequate knowledge, 36.67%
had moderately adequate knowledge. In the posttest 96.67 % respondents had adequate
knowledge. The ’t’ test value was 46.38 which was found to be significant (p < 0.01). SIM was
found to be effective in imparting knowledge to maintain heart healthy in cardiac patients.
