Abstract

Heart disease is that the leading explanation for death worldwide claiming 17.5 million lives per year Every day, 20,000 new heart patients become sick. Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) could be a ruinous event that contains a great negative impact on the healthcare system. In this background, a pre- experimental study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a basic life support (BLS) and advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) educational package on terms of knowledge and practice of nursing officers in selected hospital of Delhi. The objectives of the study were to develop an educational package regarding BLS and ACLS for nursing officers. To assess and evaluate nursing officers' knowledge of BLS and ACLS before and after administration of a BLS and ACLS educational package. To assess and evaluate the practice of nursing officers regarding BLS and ACLS before and after administration of educational package on BLS and ACLS. To determine the relationship between knowledge and practice of nursing officers after administration of educational package on BLS and ACLS. To determine the relationship between nursing officers' post-test knowledge score with demographic variables. To find out association between post-tests practice score of nursing officers with selected demographic variables. A quasi-experimental research method was used with a sample size of 100 nurses from a selected hospital. Purposive sampling technique was used. A structured teaching program with help of power point presentation, 10 picture cards and demonstrations of BLS and ACLS, one information booklet and 2 pocket reference cards were used. A significant difference was observed in mean pretest and post-test knowledge and practice scores. The educational package for BLS and ACLS is a good strategy for updating knowledge and practice.
